· WinRAR introduces an original compression algorithm. It provides high compression ratios on executable files, object libraries, large text files, etc.

· WinRAR offers an optional compression algorithm highly optimized for multimedia data.

· WinRAR supports files and archives up to 9,223,372,036,854,775,807 bytes in size, about 9000PB. The number of archived files is unlimited for all practical purposes.

· WinRAR provides complete support for RAR and ZIP 2.0 archives and is able to unpack CAB, ARJ, LZH, TAR, GZ, ACE, UUE, BZ2, JAR, ISO, Z, 7Z archives.

· WinRAR supports NTFS file security and data streams.

· WinRAR offers both a classic interactive Windows interface and the command line interface.

· WinRAR provides functionality for creating a 'solid' archive, which can raise the compression ratio by 10% - 50% over more common methods, particularly when packing large numbers of small files.

Limitations:

· The number of files, which can be added to an archive, depends upon the amount of available memory and the length of file names. Roughly 128 bytes of memory are required per archived file for RAR archive. For example, it can take about 128 MB to compress one million of files. WinRAR has been tested to handle over one million of files.

· The size of a RAR archive, as well as the size of any single file within a RAR archive, is limited to 8,589,934,591 GB (9,223,372,036,854,775,807 bytes). Note that to create archives larger than 4 GB, you need to use NTFS, as older file systems do not support such large files.

· The size of a ZIP archive, as well as the size of any single file within a ZIP archive, is limited to 2 GB.

· In general RAR archive format is much better optimized for heavy tasks involving huge number of files and gigabytes of disk space.

What's New in This Release:

• RAR 5.0 archives can include an optional quick open information controlled with -qo[-|+] switch or "Quick open information" options group in archiving dialog. It allows to open the archive contents in WinRAR faster. This version provides better update peformance for archives containing both quick open information and service records, such as NTFS file security. Also default parameters of quick open information are optimized to achieve faster open time for such archives.
• Bugs fixed:
• "Find" command could fail when searching text string in .7z archives;
• when opening RAR 5.0 archive with encrypted file names stored in another such archive, WinRAR could issue an erroneous message that password is incorrect. It happened only if passwords to inner and outer archives were different. It did not affect extraction, all files could be unpacked regardless of this message;
• option "Use for all archives" in password dialog did not suppress additional password requests for RAR 5.0.
